LJ Peak Cuts His List

Thursday afternoon, Class of 2014 shooting guard LJ Peak cut his list down to five schools. The five schools that he lists are South Carolina, Georgetown, Ohio State, Florida State, and UConn. This news came as a surprise to some people because it wasn’t known if UConn was even recruiting him anymore or if he had plans to cut his list. A few months ago it was known that UConn was recruiting him hard and that he liked UConn. Then recently the staff had started going hard at Daniel Hamilton which paid off in an early commitment. However, it’s now evident that the staff hasn’t stopped pursuing the very talented Peak at all. Since he is down to five schools, it’s very likely all five will get an official visit. From there it’s up to Kevin Ollie and the staff to sell him on UConn.

Many people know how highly I think of him and his game. After watching about five of his games on ESPN and from highlight clips I became really impressed. Peak played on the same high school team as Jahlil Okafor and Paul White so there was plenty of skill on his team. However, every time I saw him he impressed me even more. He carried his team through stretches when it couldn’t score, keeping in the game.

Peak’s overall body strength is always evident. He gets to the rim when he wants but he also has good mid- and long-range games, can hit floaters or stroke it from three. He also throws down powerful dunks. Peak filled up the stat sheet on the offensive end every game with an ability to create any shot he wants for himself. Once Peak gets hot, it’s impossible to stop him. And, he can get after it on defense when he wants.

He also is ultra athletic. As I mentioned earlier his strength is great but he also is a quick and explosive player. That is evident in his latest highlight video. The first play of the video is a missed alley-op where he smashes his head on the backboard when he’s going up. If that doesn’t show to you how explosive a player is then I don’t know what will.
